Born in 1735 to a family of naval officers, he joined the Royal Navy in 1753, rising to the rank of lieutenant in 1758. In 1776, he was appointed as the commanding officer of HMS Terrible. This was a 64-gun ship of the line and one of the largest in the Royal Navy. He served in the American Revolutionary War, taking part in the Battle of the Saintes in 1782. At the Battle of the Saintes, Dixon was the British line of battle commander. He led his ships in a daring maneuver that broke the French line. This maneuver was referred to as Dixon Breaking the Line and was critical to the British victory.
