This particular work center was created to double as a gathering place and social club as well as a work center for the members of the Penderlea work-relief community. The photograph taken in 1935 was taken by American photographer and photojournalist Arthur Rothstein, commissioned by the Farm Security Administration (FSA). The photograph depicts the front porch of the work center in Penderlea Farm. It features a group of women in traditional folk attire as they sit together at the porch with a mother and child. It highlights the importance of community in the Penderlea Farm work-relief project and the sense of communal responsibility that was a part of the workers’ lives. The photograph shows both the hardships of daily life on the farm, as well as the sense of camaraderie and community bonds that formed among the workers.
