The observation tower in the heath, clad in larch wood, can be seen from afar as a striking point and orientation for hikers on the site of the former bombodrome. The military training area set up by the Soviet Union after the Second World War covers a total of around 12700 hectares and, with its many rare animals and plants, is of particular importance for nature conservation in Germany today. The national natural heritage sites are maintained and developed by the Heinz Sielmann Foundation together with the Federal Institute for Real Estate Management (BIMA).
