The observation tower in the heath, clad in larch wood, can be seen from afar as a striking point and orientation for hikers on the site of the former bombodrome. The military training area was established by the Soviet Union after the Second World War and covers a total of about 12700 hectares. Today, with its many rare animals and plants, it is particularly important for nature conservation in Germany. The national natural heritage sites are maintained and developed by the Heinz Sielmann Foundation together with the Federal Institute for Real Estate Management (BIMA).
