Foto de stock - 21 September 2021, Saxony-Anhalt, Wüsteneutzsch: The Wüsteneutzsch lock ruin stands in the middle of the green landscape. Construction began in 1939. Due to the war, it was interrupted in 1943 and then, as with the rest of the canal, which was originally intended to connect Leipzig with the Saale, the end came. The lock chambers were each to have a length of 85 metres and a width of 12 metres. Between the two locks, a canal section with a length of about 360 metres was planned as a meeting section. Only 11 kilometres of the planned 19 kilometres long canal were completed. Various communities and initiatives have been fighting for decades to close the gap to the Saale, but since the waterway is insignificant for freight shipping, the project lacks financial support.
