Heavy equipment is currently being used to tear up the jetty and concrete surfaces and prepare the renaturation of the area. The harbor was built at the beginning of the 1960s on the previously untouched coast, in violation of existing nature conservation laws. For a long time, it was used as a coastal harbor for torpedo speedboats of the GDR People's Navy and, after reunification, as a port of refuge and location for a rescue cruiser of the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS). With the construction of the new island harbor, which began just over a year ago, and the 720-meter-long pier, the longest in the Baltic Sea region, the harbor of refuge no longer needs to be maintained.
