The coat of arms with the Swedish lion and a Pomeranian griffin was granted to the city by King Frederick I of Sweden in 1720. With the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, Western Pomerania and with it Stralsund fell to Sweden for almost 200 years until the Congress of Vienna in 1815. The two Hanseatic cities of Wismar and Stralsund are celebrating their inclusion in the Unesco World Heritage List 20 years ago with 45 events until December.
