The deformity was created after a stab wound which did not want to heal. The surgery, performed by veterinarian Henk Luten, lasted about an hour. It was the second operation in a short time. A few weeks ago the animal was operated for osteoarthritis in one of the hind legs. Burgers' Zoo is the only zoo in the Netherlands with aardvarks. Across Europe, there live only thirty aardvarks in zoos. In Africa, aardvarks considered as a pest, because they dig huge caverns beneath fields.
