Foto de stock - PRODUCTION - 22 April 2021, North Rhine-Westphalia, Münster: Prof. Alexander Mellmann, EHEC expert, specialist in microbiology and hygiene at Münster University Hospital, examines samples of various germs cultivated on Petri dishes. Mellmann heads the National Consultant Laboratory for HUS syndrome, the most severe form of the intestinal germ, and maintains one of the world's largest collections of EHEC pathogen strains. On 1 May 2011, the first patient fell ill with bloody diarrhoea. The search for the origin of the germ took months. In the end, fenugreek seeds from Egypt for growing sprouts were considered the trigger. Researchers from Münster decoded the genetic material of the pathogen. What conclusions have the authorities drawn since then? Are there long-term consequences for those affected?
