Chemical weapons originating from the Wehrmacht are now to be recovered from the Dethlingen pond. The pond was filled in after the Second World War. More than 100,000 different weapons are said to be in the ten to twelve meter deep pond. An investigation of a neighboring groundwater body had revealed massive contamination with explosive ordnance degradation products. During the subsequent reconnaissance of the pond between September 2019 and April 2020 at three partial sites, a total of 2552 pieces of ordnance munitions were recovered.
