The gate, modelled on a Roman triumphal arch at the western end of Brandenburger Straße, was designed by order of Frederick the Great between 1770 and 1771. For this purpose the old, simple gate was demolished after the end of the Seven Years' War. The architect Carl von Gontard designed the city side, while his student Georg Christian Unger designed the side facing the country.
