This painting depicts the Greek hero Hercules at the court of Queen Omphale, where he would serve as a slave after being punished by God Hermes for murdering Iphitus in a fit of madness. During his enslavement, Hercules and Omphale inverted their gender roles. The scene shows Hercules surrounded by three courtly women dressing him in womenâ. . s clothing and teaching him traditionally female tasks as spinning and carding wool.
