Cracks in the canal embankment between the bodies of water require immediate safety measures. The 850-metre-long Störmthal Canal connects the two lakes - the lock now affected by slides in the embankment compensates for the difference of four metres in the water levels of the bodies of water. According to experts, a complete collapse would result in widespread flooding - in the northern urban areas from Markkleeberg to Leipzig.
