He was born in River Forest, III, and graduated from Indian University with a degree in journalism in 1949. His first job was with the City Weros Bureau in Chicago, his second with Elkhard Zruth, and his third was selling insurance. But he returned to journalism for good in 1953, joining the Christian Science Monitor as a copy boy and quickly becoming assistant New England nes editor and then chief of the Detroit bureau. his interest in business and labor reporting led him to New York and a job with the Wall Street journal covering a host of industries.
