Photo de stock - 1964 - The Old Market Cross House. This crocked little house beside the Town Hall at Windsor, now used as a lawyer's office has had an eventful history, since the first record of its habitation was made in the civic files in 1656. In 1718, Silas Bradbury, the occupier at that time, had to face the violent opposition of the Mayor of Windsor when he planned to make alterations to the place, the Mayor disputing his title to Market Cross House and actually putting a fence round it in order to stop Bradbury from gaining entry. The Royal Borough Of Windsor In Coronation Year: Always a 'must' on the list of places for the tourist to visit, Windsor this year is expecting even more visitors than usual. Although built as a stronghold by William the Conqueror in 1070, Windsor Castle has for many years been the traditional home or the Sovereign and each succeeding sovereign has added something to the glories of the ancient Castle. Twice the Castle has been besieged, the last time just before King John signed the Magna Carta at nearby Runnymade. The first Elizabeth re-constructed the Worth Terrace and walked there every day. The decapitated corpse of King Charles was 'lost' there. King Charles II laid out the famous Long Walk. Windsor owes much to King George III, for all over the town are fine examples of the splendid building of his era. Queen Victoria who statue stands at the bottom of Castle Hill, spent most of the years of her widowhood there. Many of the shops in Windsor have the 'By Appointments sign hanging over their doors and the sovereign very often shop personally in the town. (Credit Image: © Keystone Pictures USA/ZUMAPRESS.com)
