Photo de stock - Aug. 08, 1957 - 80-Year Old Sir Alliot Roe Designs A 'Car On Two Wheels': 80-year old Sir Alliot Verdon-Roe, co-founder with his brother of the famous A.V. Roe aircraft firm, and the first to fly in Britain 49 years ago - has invented a shaft-driven 'armchair' motor scooter, which will be Britain's answer to the invasion of foreign machines. Sir Alliott says it's the nearest thing to a car on two wheels. The 60 m.p.h. Avle Bicar has its driving seat situated between the wheels and not over the back wheel as on standard scooters - and is about a foot lower. It has a cushioned backrest and the driver's legs are stretched cut in front of his instead of downwards. The handlebar grips are inclined like the steering wheel of a car. The power unit is a 192 c.c. Le Velocette engine. Photo shows Sir Alliott Verdon-Roe adopts an unorthodox manner to ride an orthodox bicycle - at his home at Rowlands Castle in Hampshire.
