The approximately 40-meter-high obelisk was the central memorial and the landmark of the National Memorial Sachsenhausen of the former GDR, which was opened in 1961. The accommodation barracks were built in four rows around the semicircular roll call area. The Sachsenhausen concentration camp was built in the summer of 1936 by prisoners from the Emsland camps. Between 1936 and 1945, more than 200,000 people were imprisoned in Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Photo: Patrick Pleul/dpa-Zentralbild/ZB. - Oranienburg/Brandenburg/Germany
