Wittenberge has received five million euros in urban development funding. Under the new programme ""Growth and Sustainable Renewal"", the federal and state governments are providing money for the upgrading, demolition and safeguarding of buildings that shape the cityscape. For example, 3.5 million euros have been earmarked primarily for the renovation and conversion of the historic and listed station building. Since 1991, the city on the Elbe, including the urban development funds now approved, has been allocated around 74.8 million euros from several urban development programmes, including European Union funds.
