The Winter Palace can be visited until January 7, 2024. With the start of the Advent season, Wernigerode Castle is transformed into a festive building that is partly cozy and partly representative and radiant. A very special atmospheric magic pervades all the rooms of the castle. The historic rooms in the two castle tours are festively decorated to create a lasting Christmas and winter atmosphere. In addition to these modern elements, there are historical references to festivities in Wernigerode Castle. At various stations, there are insights into the past that go back 120 years and more. Using contemporary reports, interesting exhibits such as a children's service and historical illustrations, visitors can experience winter and Christmas festivities as well as a little of the ball season at the end of the 19th century. A special highlight is the ballroom, where the 7-metre-long ballroom table is festively decorated for Christmas and behind which an almost 6-metre-high Christmas tree shines its lights. Wernigerode Castle is one of the first places in the Harz Mountains to put up a Christmas tree. This custom only became established in the 19th century in the 1850s.
