The Soviet occupation forces established ten special camps in their zone. Around 60000 people were imprisoned in the Weesow and Sachsenhausen special camps until their dissolution in the spring of 1950, 12000 of whom died of hunger and disease. The anniversary of the arrival of the first inmates in Sachsenhausen has been observed by former prisoners and their relatives since the early 1990s as a day of remembrance for the victims of the special camp.
