More than 1300 animals, some of which are the size of the palm of the hand, will find their new habitat in selected streams in the Vogtland region over the next few weeks. The population of old mussels from natural reproduction is estimated to be less than 250 today. The river pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) can live for more than 100 years and grow to 15 centimetres long. It has a thick-walled, almost black shell. The molluscs make high demands on the water quality. Photo: Jan Woitas/dpa-Zentralbild/dpa. - Bad Brambach/Saxony/Germany
