In 1870, Füchtner's great-great-great-grandfather is said to have made the first Erzgebirge nutcrackers, which today stand alongside smokers and pyramids for the Erzgebirge all over the world. The craft business is continuing the old tradition and has now flown a mini nutcracker into space for the first time. The nutcracker Wilhelm from the Ore Mountains is now back on Earth after his trip into space. Wilhelm was launched to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2021 and spent almost a year in space. Astronaut Matthias Maurer took the 12-centimeter tall and 29-gram figure with him. During his 350 days in space, Wilhelm orbited the Earth 5573 times. He returned in August 2022 with the SpaceX Dragon CRS-25 transport rocket. Photo: Hendrik Schmidt/dpa. - Seiffen/Saxony/Germany
