The mountain goat (Capra pyrenaica hispanica) is a species of wild goat native to the mountains of the Iberian Peninsula. It is one of the most familiar large mammals in the region, living in almost any environment, from desert to snow-capped mountains, and is highly adapted to the harsh landscapes it inhabits. They are usually found on rocky cliffs, slopes or ledges, where they use their sharp claws to keep a firm grip on the rocky surfaces. The mountain goat is a very hardy animal, able to survive long periods of extreme cold and low-nutrition diets in the mountains. It is the only species of wild goat found in the region and, accordingly, it is one of the symbols of the wild Spanish landscape.
