The mouth of the Emscher into the Rhine will be relocated from Dinslaken by almost 500 meters north to Voerde. Fish will then be able to swim barrier-free up the new Emscher from the Rhine through a newly created floodplain. The Emscher has been completely free of wastewater since January 2022 following the construction of a parallel sewer. The river was previously an open, above-ground combined sewer with rainwater and wastewater.
