Richard Francis Burton's (1821-1890) extensive travels included a journey to Mecca, which he made disguised as a Pathan. His account of the journey, which he made in 1851-1853, made him famous. He later undertook an expedition to locate the source of the Nile, with John Hanning Speke. He also translated the Arabian Nights and the Kama Sutra into English. Burton was knighted in 1886.
