When it is the mating season for mountain goats, a male goat can use his sense of smell to detect the presence of an available female. During this period, the male goat will often approach a female and sniff her, using his sensitive olfactory organs to detect if she is reproductively receptive. If the female is ready to mate, the male will initiate courtship behaviour such as nudging, mounting, and licking. If the female is not ready to mate, the male will typically leave or move on to a different goat.
