Photo de stock - Hagia Sophia in south central Crete is the site of an ancient Minoan settlement. During excavations between 1900 and 1908, a sarcophagus was found with frescoes along all four sides depicting religious scenes. Scholars date it to around 1400 B. C. The scene pictured here is on one of the long sides of the sarcophagus, which is now housed in Crete's Herakleion Museum. The running wave pattern is definitely in the Minoan style. The figures appear to be related in style to that of Egypt at the time. This illustration is taken from the original lithograph made in 1908.
