With more than 22,000 square kilometers, the Etosha National Park, open from sunrise to sunset, is one of the most important tourist attractions in Namibia. Already in 1907, the German governor Friedrich von Lindequist declared it an animal protection area, at that time the entire territory of the national park covered almost 95,000 square kilometers, which, however, was gradually reduced to today's size as part of reforms to distribute land to the population, with the park always dawith about the same size as the state of Hesse. Today the entire national park is fenced, which is why the wildlife threatened by poaching has been able to recover well over the years. In total, not only the Big Five but also around 110 other species of mammals, along with more than 380 bird and 110 reptile species, are at home.
