During the riots on 11 January 2016, the windows of numerous shops were smashed and cars set on fire. Connewitz is considered a stronghold for leftist and autonomous groups. The public prosecutor's office had investigated more than 200 allegedly involved parties. More than 80 proceedings followed, each with two defendants.
