Stock Photo - The church was originally a fortress, but was later transformed into a sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of the Cape Nossa Senhora do Cabo. According to tradition, the Virgin appeared here to an elderly couple in 1410.  The church was designed by architect Joao Antunes and was built in 1701 in the Baroque style. Being a pilgrimage destination, it was flanked by a series of royal dependencies that provided and cared for the pilgrims. A small 15th_century Ermida da Memoria Chapel of Memory can be seen not far from the sanctuary. Its interior is covered in 18th century tile panels featuring the legend of the Lady of the Cape.
