The city´s name was rendered as Osca, and was a Roman colony, Urbs Victrix Osca, during the Roman Empire. The Huesca Cathedral Catedral de la Transfiguracion del Senor is in Gothic style. Its construction began during the reign of king Jaime I of Aragon around 1273 on the ruined foundations of a mosque and was completed in the 15th century. The lower part of the facade was designed by Guillermo Inglis in the 14th century. It boasts an impressive portico, outlined by seven pointed archivolts, replete with sculptured images all along it and finished off in a gable with a rose window above. On the tympanum is the Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus under a canopy, flanked by two angels. To the left are the Three Kings, and to the right are Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. On the lintel are the coats_of_arms of Huesca, Aragon and Bishop Lopez de Azlor. In 1574, the dividing line between the lower and upper parts of the facade was highlighted by framed eaves on wooden brackets. This building is one of the architectural landmarks of northern Spain.
