Lead was added to gasoline in the 1920s to boost octane, and was removed late in the 20th century due to health concerns and lead´s damaging effects on catalytic converters. The pump is on display at the History Center, a museum operated by the Allen County-Fort Wayne Historical Society in the former Fort Wayne City Hall building.
