Stock Photo - The Tongariro Crossing is considered by many to be the finest ´one day walk´ in New Zealand, if not the world. The trail takes hikers through a volcanic plateau of old lava flows, volcanic craters, and gives allows the opportunity to walk between a field of three active volcanoes, Mt Tongariro, Ruapehu, and Ngauruhoe which stars as the Lord of the Ring´s Mount Doom. The ground steams with geothermal heat, and steam often rises from the active volcano cones. A hiker jumps through the air along the trail. Ngauruhoe is clearly seen in the background.
