Cued speech enables deaf persons to receive the langue by sight ; it was set up in the US by the doctor R. Orin Cornett in 1967. The hand that is placed near the face, completes syllabe by syllabe the movement of the lips so it enables to lift the ambiguity existing between various speech sound corresponding to the same movemetns of the lips. There are 5 positions of the hand to code the vowels (aside, cheakbone, mouth, chin and throat) and 8 configurations of the fingers to code the consonants. The cued speech is not sign langage. The French sign language uses signs to designate words but also dactylology (each letter of the alphabet is represented by a defined position of the fingers then enabling to spell a word) and the lip reading.
