Stock Photo - 01 July 2021, Saxony-Anhalt, Eisleben: An opened sarcophagus lies on the site of the former royal palace of Helfta. Archaeologists from the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and Archaeology had already begun weeks ago to uncover the foundation walls of the church of Emperor Otto the Great (912-973). In the process, the archaeologists came across a large number of burials, including several stone crypts from the 10th to 15th centuries. The sarcophagus contains the skeleton of a child. Apparently, high-ranking dignitaries, adults and children were buried in the church. It was the burial place for the noble families of the region.
