The opening of Germany's second largest pilgrimage has been taking place in Kevelaer in the Lower Rhine for 375 years. Around one million pilgrims are expected in the small town by the official end of the pilgrimage season in November. Kevelaer is considered the second largest pilgrimage site in Germany behind Altötting in Bavaria.
