The airfield was built in the 1930s and used by Heinkel-Werke and the Luftwaffe of the Wehrmacht. After the end of World War II, Soviet occupation forces almost completely dismantled the facilities and used the remains of the factory airfield as a military airfield. Around 2003, the newly constructed B 96 federal highway was built on a large section of the runway as Oranienburg's western bypass. According to the Oranienburg city administration, it should also be possible for commercial enterprises to settle on the approximately 30-hectare northern part of the site.
