Stock Photo - 03 March 2021, Brandenburg, Neuzelle: On an area of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union Germany (NABU) in the Neuzell lowlands, a reed stand is burned down in a controlled manner. In the fight against the spread of African swine fever, the burning of reed areas began on the same day. The measure serves the purpose of creating a zone free of wild boar between two fixed fence lines and to enable a successful removal of all wild boar. The reed areas naturally serve as preferred retreats for the redds. However, for hunting purposes, the extensive and tall reedbeds are inaccessible. By burning the reed areas in strips, these retreat areas are severely restricted and can be controlled. Reed mowing is technically not feasible on the wet moorland areas.
