On the occasion of his 110th anniversary of death on 03.05.2019 numerous faithful gathered in his native town in the federal state of Sinaloa. Malverde, who is not recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church, is said to have been a highwayman during his lifetime. Many Mexicans worship him as a kind of Robin Hood. According to oral tradition, he robbed the rich families in the Sinaloa region and then distributed the booty among the poor. The son of a drug lord who is said to have done business without his consent and was put on the death list by his father in the 1970s, is said to have saved his life thanks to the worship of Malverde.
