The pilot plant for a novel oilseed biorefinery that has now been handed over is intended to increase the material value added of rapeseed. Conventional processing into oil destroys, among other things, high-quality proteins in the oilseed. This is avoided in the new plant. According to the Fraunhofer Institute, up to 50 kilograms of rapeseed can be processed daily. So far, the process used has only been implemented on a laboratory scale. Attempts are being made to obtain the oil by ethanolic extraction. The Fraunhofer Center for Chemical-Biotechnological Processes is celebrating its tenth anniversary.
