The dimensions of the new ship lift are enormous. The trough, in which the ships can travel up or down the approximately 36 meters in the elevator, weighs 9800 tons. The Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration has invested around 520 million euros in the new lift. The old ship lift dates back to 1934 and is still in operation.
