With a collection from 1498 onwards, it is one of the oldest public scientific libraries in Germany. With its numerous prints and autographs from the time of the Reformation, it is also considered a treasure among experts in the history of the Reformation. The stock currently comprises about 250,000 manuscripts and prints. Its old holdings are of national importance because of the quantity and especially because of the many unique specimens.
