After nearly nine months of fierce fighting, Mosul was liberated in July 2017 by an alliance of forces. Considered one of the toughest urban battles in recent history, the Battle of Mosul inflicted heavy damage on much of the city, as well as heritage sites in the city's old town, not to mention buildings with historical significance that were plundered under the IS rule.
