On railway lines without overhead lines, the passenger train can draw its power from batteries, which are then recharged by pantographs, for example when stopping at stations. One charge should be enough for about 100 kilometers. Alongside hydrogen trains, battery trains are seen as an alternative to diesel railcars on non-electrified lines. From the timetable change in December, such trains are to run regularly on lines in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. In Saxony, battery trains will connect the cities of Leipzig and Chemnitz from 2023.
