The historic fortress is run by a restoration association with around 60 volunteer members. They are responsible for the preservation of the area and are now receiving 2.4 million euros in funding from the European Union (EFRE). Built for military purposes in 1873, it was considered one of the strongest and most modern Prussian fortresses. It is to be developed into a tourist attraction.
