On the same day, the harvest of the pungent root officially began in the Spreewald. This year, around ten hectares of horseradish are being grown in the Spreewald. Traditionally, the root vegetable is harvested from October to January, with the main harvest time being in November. Horseradish is an important and traditional crop in the Spreewald and, along with Spreewald gherkins, is one of only three protected geographical indications in the state of Brandenburg.
