The timepiece was stored in the depot of the cathedral treasure and had been restored by the Förderverein Dom und Domschatz zu Halberstadt with its current sponsoring project. The sermon clock was attached to the pulpit basket from the late 16th century and clocked the words of the cathedral preacher through an hourglass made of four mouth-blown glass flasks.
