Stock Photo - 09 May 2023, Saxony-Anhalt, Thale: The nine-day-old porcupines are in their enclosure at Thale Zoo on Tuesday. They were born on April 30. For the porcupines Pinky and Brain there is a double happy ending: After the animals disappeared in March and then reappeared, they have now had offspring for the first time. The zoo in Thale is collecting suggestions for the names of the two young animals, a girl and a boy, until May 14. Porcupines reportedly usually have two young, but sometimes three or even just one. In total, they are said to be pregnant for between 70 and 75 days, just over two months. According to zoo manager Nils Becker, porcupines come into the world already fully developed and are suckled only briefly. After a few weeks, they could already eat solid food. The quills are stiffened hairs. The prickers on their backs allow the animals to stand up when an enemy approaches. Porcupines belong to the rodent family.
