The festivities began with the Peace Prayer in the Nikolaikirche, where many people found courage and hope in the midst of uncertain conditions at the time. In the evening, all the city center bells rang out and several light installations lit up the center. On October 9, 1989, at least 70,000 people had demonstrated in Leipzig.
