On the ""Greif"", work is underway by crew members to dismantle and remove fixtures from the hull of the sailing vessel. The currently unseaworthy sail training vessel is to be refurbished and put back on the water. According to an expert opinion, the refurbishment will cost 3.5 million euros. The citizens of Greifswald voted to contribute 940,000 euros to the refurbishment of the city-owned ship. The sail training ship is to be transferred to a repair yard in autumn 2021. Exactly where this will be will only be decided by the EU-wide shipyard tendering process.The Förderverein Rahsegel Greif e.V. is still asking for donors and supporters for new sails. The 40-metre-long two-masted barque, built in 1951 as the GDR sail training ship ""Wilhelm Pieck"", has been moored at the pier in its home port of Wieck (part of Greifswald) since the beginning of 2020.
